The God-kiss

Some years ago, a term came to my mind that describes the serendipitous, often unnoticed, gifts that Love provides us. I call them “God-kisses.” They’ve always been, always will be, yet how often we miss them.

Yesterday, I received such a kiss, though I almost stepped on it. I was walking through a field, my thoughts who knows where, my eyes on the blue sky when I happened to glance down. A crocus, pictured, swayed by its lonely self not six inches from my shoe and my breath caught. I had come so close to not only missing its beauty but actually flattening it. And that tiny kiss, really only a buss, got me thinking.

How often do we walk right by the miraculous? How often do we allow the worries and concerns of this day, no matter how valid they are, to distract us from the signs of God’s love, which are always more valid?  How often do we miss acknowledging the still, small voice of the Spirit who nudges us to notice, to look down, or up, or more closely? How often do we miss the kiss?

Given and Received

A simple thing,
surrounded by a barren field
of early spring,
so small, alone, like me.
If not for the sacred
whisper, “Look down,”
I would have stepped
on it or missed it
all together.
Instead, I obeyed
and blessed
the early purple crocus,
crocus vernus, its polite name,
native to the Alps,
yet somehow blessing me
with its deep purple
of royalty,
its vivid orange of fire
while I looked on,
alone, in a hushed spot of time
and it nodded to me,
alone in a barren field.
