From Pelagius to David Bowie

February 11, 2024

“Write down with your own hand on paper what God has written with his hand on the human heart.”  Pelagius

For Christmas this past year, I gave my daughter a stack of notecards, each one inscribed with a quotation that had drifted across my path from the Universe and had gifted me.  The varied sources include Jesus and the Buddha, Mary Oliver and Richard Rohr, e.e. cummings and the 12-Step program, Julian of Norwich and Brene Brown, and even the ever-wise and popular Anonymous.

These quotations showed up in my journal, on my bathroom mirror, on the refrigerator, or posted on my writing desk.  Something about them touched me, consoled me, reminded me, surprised me, grounded me, or challenged me.  Each one seemed a word that God/the Universe intended for me.

But . . . I did not go deeper with them to discover just what that something was that God, in God’s many forms, had written on the human heart:  on my heart.  These daily Lenten reflections will be my attempt to take that dive.

What touches a deep cord in me might also touch the same one in you, so I will be sharing my reflections each day of Lent (except Sundays) beginning this Wednesday, Feb. 14.  If you follow them, I hope that each reflection will lead you to ponder why it resonates with you. May each quotation become a candle illuminating our way back to each other and to the Divine.

It is enough to sit
and listen
with one candle
in a darkened room
for the Truth
to emerge
from the shadows.
